The freelance writer playbook: $0 to $3k/mo without LinkedIn cringe

You don't need a personal brand, a newsletter, or a viral X post to land your first freelance writing client. You need a portfolio and a cold email list.

The freelance writer playbook: $0 to $3k/mo without LinkedIn cringe

The two-list strategy

Forget the funnel. Forget the lead magnet. Here's what actually got me from broke to $3k/mo as a freelance writer in 90 days.

List 1: Portfolio (3 pieces)

Pick a niche — SaaS, fintech, climate, anything you actually know something about — and write three sample posts as if you were paid for them. Don't ask for permission. Don't wait for a client. Just write them.

  • 800–1,200 words each
  • Real research, real opinions
  • Hosted on a free Notion page or a $4/mo Carrd site

That's your portfolio. Done.

List 2: Cold email list (50 prospects)

Use LinkedIn (yes, ironic) to find 50 marketing leads, content directors, or founders at companies in your niche. Get their email via Hunter, Apollo, or just guessing the pattern.

The email template

> Subject: Quick question about your blog > > Hi {name}, > > I read your post on {specific thing} and noticed you publish about 2x/month. I'm a writer focused on {niche} — I've written for {2-3 references or 'my own publication'}. > > Would it be useful if I pitched 3 article ideas for {their company}? > > {Your name}

That's it. No "I hope this email finds you well." No 12-paragraph pitch.

The numbers

  • 50 emails sent
  • ~2 conversations
  • ~1 trial article ($300–$600)

Do this every two weeks. By month three, you'll be turning work away.
